Despite the global trade contraction, FTZs offer unique opportunities for duty deferral, duty reduction, and duty elimination. Recent updates to regulations, including changes related to the U.S. Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, have emphasized the importance of compliance and due diligence for companies operating within FTZs. The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) released a detailed report outlining the significant impact of FTZs on employment and the cost-competitiveness of products from firms operating in U.S. FTZs.

Overall, the USITC's findings reveal that U.S. FTZs significantly improve the cost-competitiveness of U.S. firms. This is primarily achieved through duty reduction on shipments entering the U.S. and duty exemption on direct export shipments from the FTZs. In 2021, businesses operating in U.S. FTZs experienced duty cost savings of $1.2 billion by utilizing these features, bringing to light the financial advantages of participating in the FTZ program.
