What’s Shaking Up the Global Market?
The fourth quarter of 2024 is shaping up to be a pivotal period for global trade. Political developments, regional conflicts, and evolving regulations are creating ripple effects that businesses must navigate carefully.
Here’s a closer look at the key trends reshaping global markets—and how they could impact your business.
Tariff Increases: Buckle Up, EVs and Batteries Hit Hard
The current administration hit the gas on tariffs in 2024, targeting Chinese imports with sharp increases.
Electric Vehicles (EVs): Tariffs skyrocket from 25% to 100%.
Batteries: Raised from 7.5% to 25%.
These measures target industries critical to U.S. economic security, such as semiconductors and solar cells, in an effort to reduce dependence on Chinese supply chains. However, companies importing from China now face tougher financial decisions.
With global conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war and Red Sea trade route disruptions adding more instability, businesses must act fast to optimize logistics and explore alternative sourcing options.
Forced Labor Regulations: Increasing Scrutiny on Supply Chains
The U.S. is doubling down on its Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) enforcement, expanding the crackdown to cover additional products like:
- Automotive Parts
- PVC Goods
- Seafood Products

Meanwhile, the EU has implemented new laws banning imports tied to forced labor, further complicating compliance for international businesses. In this context, supply chain transparency and thorough audits are more crucial than ever.
Adding to the challenges, tensions between Israel and Hamas are causing disruptions that could impact trade in the Middle East, especially in sectors like energy and logistics. Companies operating globally need to proactively manage these risks, or they could face fines, detentions, or reputational damage.
Staying One Step Ahead: ITC Diligence Has Your Back
Navigating these regulatory shifts is no easy feat, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. ITC Diligence is here to help you stay compliant, optimize supply chains, and manage tariffs efficiently. Whether you’re reworking logistics strategies or ensuring your imports meet forced labor standards, we’ll get you where you need to go—no delays, no fines, just smooth sailing.
Manufacturing 4.0: The Future of Production
The manufacturing industry is undergoing a significant transformation, known as Manufacturing 4.0, which integrates smart technologies like AI, IoT, robotics, and advanced analytics into production. These innovations are reshaping the way businesses operate, enhancing productivity, flexibility, and efficiency.
At ITC Diligence International, Inc., we are dedicated to helping manufacturers adapt to this new era by navigating global trade regulation, optimizing supply chains, and managing the complexities of customs.
As technology reshapes manufacturing, having a trusted 4PL supply chain partner like ITC Diligence is critical to ensuring your business remains competitive.
What is Manufacturing 4.0?
Manufacturing 4.0, also referred to as Industry 4.0, builds on previous revolutions in mechanization, mass production, and automation by incorporating smart, interconnected systems into production processes.
This means machines now communicate in real-time, predicting maintenance needs, and improving operations autonomously.
Benefits of Manufacturing 4.0
- Increased Efficiency: Automated systems enable real-time optimization, minimizing waste and energy consumption.
- Greater Flexibility: Quick shifts in production lines allow companies to respond to changing market demands efficiently.
- Cost Savings: Predictive maintenance reduces downtime and labor expenses.
- Enhanced Quality Control: Advanced sensors detect defects early, ensuring high product standards.
- Sustainability: Reduced waste and energy use contribute to environmentally responsible production.
Challenges and Future Trends
Transitioning to Manufacturing 4.0 requires significant investment and new skill sets. As the technology evolves, new trends such as Edge Computing and Blockchain will further enhance manufacturing efficiency by improving data processing and securing supply chains.

Fun Fact
Did you know?
In 2023, Texas topped the charts for both merchandise received and exports in U.S. Foreign Trade Zones. The Lone Star State saw booming activity, driven by sectors like petroleum, machinery, and consumer electronics. Meanwhile, Louisiana claimed the second spot, riding on a surge in oil and chemical exports.
These state-level insights show how FTZs play a vital role in keeping U.S. trade competitive on the global stage by fostering efficient, duty-free trade zones that streamline logistics and boost exports.
This underscores the importance of leveraging FTZs for strategic operations—especially with partners like ITC Diligence, who ensure smooth customs management and compliance for businesses across industries.
NAFTZ Advocacy Update: Progress and New Opportunities
Since joining two of NAFTZ’s key advocacy groups six months ago, ITC Diligence has been hard at work contributing to meaningful discussions between Customs headquarters and the NAFTZ Executive Committee. One hot topic: the challenges importers face when 3PL Foreign Trade Zones (FTZs) can no longer store goods flagged for forced labor.
In response to these challenges, many businesses are turning to Bonded Warehouses, which offer a secure solution for storing goods while meeting customs requirements.
Although these warehouses are limited to Port of Entry zones and can carry higher costs, they provide essential support by ensuring goods are safely stored and compliant during processing.
Bonded Warehouses play a crucial role in keeping trade moving, offering businesses a reliable option when flexibility is less of a priority.
ITC’s Leadership: Steering the Future of FTZ Operations
Beyond advocacy, ITC Diligence has stepped up to co-chair the Zone Operations Group. We're diving deep into updating the FTZ Operator Manual (last revised in 2014). Our mission? To ensure the new guidelines reflect today’s fast-paced trade environment while providing more operational flexibility for FTZ operators.

We’re committed to helping shape these critical updates—providing solutions to Customs, supporting trade operators, and championing efficient, clear regulations that help businesses grow. ITC Diligence’s role in NAFTZ reflects our dedication to leadership and collaboration, driving positive change in the trade community.
The Foreign-Trade Zones (FTZ) program continues to make a significant impact on U.S. businesses, providing economic advantages and fostering global trade opportunities. The 85th Annual Report highlights several important trends shaping the program’s role in international trade.
Key Takeaways from the Report:
- More Businesses Leveraging FTZs: Companies across manufacturing, logistics, and distribution are increasingly using FTZs to cut costs and improve supply chain efficiency.
- Job Growth Boost: Thousands of new jobs have been added, with industries like automotive and electronics leading the way.
- Export Surge: Over 60% of goods leaving FTZs are shipped to international markets, supporting U.S. businesses’ global growth.
Additional Highlights:
- Increased Investment: The report notes a surge in private investment within FTZs, particularly in warehousing and advanced manufacturing facilities. This reflects the growing confidence in FTZs as a vehicle for economic growth and innovation.
- Energy Industry Growth: Energy products, including renewable energy components, are increasingly processed through FTZs. This highlights the zones’ role in supporting green energy initiatives and reducing costs for U.S. companies in this sector.
- Advanced Compliance Capabilities: With tightening global trade regulations, FTZs are evolving to offer businesses enhanced compliance tools. These include advanced reporting features and automated systems for customs filings, which reduce administrative burdens and improve accuracy.
The Bigger Picture
The 85th Annual Report showcases the FTZ program as a cornerstone of U.S. trade policy, providing businesses with tangible benefits such as duty deferral, cost savings, and streamlined logistics.
ITC Diligence, with its expertise in FTZ setup and compliance, is helping companies harness these advantages to remain competitive in an ever-evolving global market.
